Ambientada en la favela Madureira de Morro da Serrinha, el documental Herdeiros, de la cineasta afrobasileña Thais Nepomuceno, es una historia de legado cultural que rastrea las profundas raíces del Carnaval a través de una comunidad afrobrasileña, donde la cultura y la historia ancestral se transmiten oralmente de generación en generación a pesar de la represión de la cultura dominante, y explora las raíces profundas del Carnaval en la esclavitud, el racismo y la segregación, así como la hipersexualización de la mujer en la fiesta brasileña.
Inicialmente tenía la intención de centrarse estrictamente en la música que se encuentra en Madureira, donde convergieron géneros como jongo, samba, hip hop, funk brasileño y rap. Pero el documental cobró vida propia ante las fascinantes historias de la gente que vivía en Morro da Serrinha. “Estaba fascinada por su magia y potencial creativo, por cómo fueron fortalecidos por sus antepasados y utilizaron la tradición africana de la narración oral como una herramienta de resistencia», explica la cineasta.
Al crecer en los barrios más pobres de Río de Janeiro, Nepomuceno sabía que siempre tenía una o tres historias que contar. Incluso cuando la vida la sacó de Brasil para estudiar cine en la universidad y, más tarde, para vivir y viajar por toda Europa, siempre imaginó contar la riqueza de su herencia afrobrasileña. «Fue allí donde vi cómo un barrio pobre y marginado como Madureira se había convertido un entorno musical tan poderoso».
El documental se puede ver desde distintos prismas y el primer objetivo fue mostrar la importancia de la cultura de la favela para la historia de Río y para la cultura brasileña. “Este contacto con el Proyecto Herdeiros reafirmó la importancia cultural de Madureira. Los niños del proyecto realizan un trabajo social de empoderamiento y aportan identificación y representatividad a los menores. Cuando era niña, solo veía a los negros en la televisión como esclavos, amas de casa, etc. Ahora ven a más y más personas de la comunidad, su cultura está representada y ocupa espacios que no están abiertos para nosotros».
El documental también muestra las dinámica de género de la favela, específicamente en torno a la hiper-sexualización de los cuerpos de las mujeres negras durante las celebraciones del Carnaval del país. «Como mujer afrobrasileña, siempre me preocupaba la imagen de la ‘bailarina sexy’ para el resto de la comunidad internacional», explica Nepomuceno. “Y como cineasta, creo que estas imágenes deben cambiar. La mayoría de la gente conoce el Carnaval como esta gran fiesta, pero no conoce sus raíces profundas en la esclavitud, el racismo y la segregación. Todo fue construido alrededor de la opresión, y todavía lo es «.
Nepomuceno ve Herdeiros como un desafío para la comunidad internacional para comprender la cultura brasileña desde sus raíces, a menudo impregnada de sexismo y colorismo, y como un intento de recuperar el poder al contar la propia narrativa.
